TWENTY-THREE

9 Days Before the Wedding

I’m stirred from my restless sleep by the persistent buzzing of my phone. My eyes are heavy from hours of crying, and my body aches with emotions I’ve never allowed myself to feel so intensely for a man.

The phone continues to vibrate, and I stare at Nathan’s name on the screen. I’m not sure if I can cope with talking to him right now. But then the buzzing stops, and I pick up the phone, my finger hovering over the call button. I can’t ignore him forever.

Holding my breath, I call him back and he picks up on the first ring.

“Brynn?” His voice is breathless.

I remain silent.

“I’m so sorry,” he finally croaks. “I’m sorry we… I didn’t tell you that Elena and I—”

“That you loved each other?” I interrupt, my voice full of bitterness. “That you wanted to spend the rest of your lives together? That none of you told me? That you gave her the same ring you gave me?”

I launch into a tirade, my words a torrent of pent-up emotions. I tell him about feeling betrayed, humiliated, and blindsided. Nathan tries to assure me that his heart only belongs to me, that he loves me without question. He tries hard to mend the cracks that have formed between us.

“Baby, I know I really messed up here. But I want you to be happy, and if letting Elena go as our wedding planner will make you feel better, then it’s fine with me. I’ll never talk to her again, I promise you.”

I hesitate. The wedding is only a little over a week away. But I can’t stand the thought of seeing Elena again, let alone fathom the prospect of working with her on the wedding now.

“Yes,” I say decidedly. “We’re not using Elena anymore.”

“Should I… or do you want me to—?”

“I’ll handle it,” I say. “I’ll let her go.”

“Okay. I think it’s for the best, anyway. I’m not sure she’s the person I thought she was,” says Nathan cryptically.

“What do you mean?”

“I can’t say a lot right now, but you know Amanda was her client, years ago? Well, Elena told me soon after I became Amanda’s lawyer that she wanted to distance herself from her. She said she’d read up about the case and she wasn’t sure about her innocence anymore. But I was doing some digging last night, and I think she’s downplayed her friendship with her. All I’m saying is, until this case is over, it might be best to keep a distance from her anyway.”

“Are you saying she was involved somehow in—?”

“No, I’m not saying anything. Just, look, go ahead and fire her but try to keep things civil, and stay away from her.”

As soon as we hang up, I dial Elena’s number, and when she answers, her voice is calm and composed, as if she’s been expecting my call.

“Hi, Elena. I… we need to let you go as our wedding planner.”

There’s a pause, then she sighs. “Yeah, okay, I understand.”

“You… you do?” Her reaction catches me off guard, and I’m not sure how to respond.
